National Sunglasses Day: Sunglasses Should Do More Than Protect Your Eyes

June 18, 2026

Every year on June 27, the Vision Council celebrates National Sunglasses Day to remind you to do one simple thing: put on a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation.

High-quality sunglasses that completely protect against UV rays are the easiest ways to protect your vision when you spend time outdoors. The Vision Council urges everyone that UV protection should be the first thing they look for when choosing a pair of sunglasses. However, UV protection is only part of the message.

For over a decade at Method Seven, we've dedicated ourselves to studying the effects of the entire light spectrum on how people see, especially in challenging environments and circumstances. After all those years, one thing has become clear. Sunglasses need to do more than just protect your eyes. They need to help you see better.

Whether you're flying an aircraft or working under powerful horticultural lighting, your eyes are constantly processing information in the form of light. This is how you see and make sense of the world and what allows you to perform at your best. Therefore, the quality of light information affects your safety, confidence, and performance.

And this is why not all sunglasses are created equal!

The Vision Council urges you to consider both how and where you'll actually use your sunglasses before you make a purchase. Different activities place different demands on your vision. So, the ideal eyewear for one environment may not be the best choice for another. This is what we mean when we say that eyewear is not a one-size-fits-all situation.

Most sunglasses are built for everyday wear. That's perfectly fine for running errands or driving to work, but some environments present unique visual challenges that require engineered, specialized solutions.

For example, commercial pilots spend hours managing glare, haze, and constantly changing light conditions while at the same time needing to maintain awareness both inside and outside the cockpit. Ultra runners move through rapidly changing environments in and out of the tree canopy where contrast and depth perception can make a meaningful difference in staying on your feet. Indoor cultivators work under powerful LED and HPS lighting systems that can distort colors and contribute to visual fatigue and dramatic afterimages over time. Though superficially these situations might seem like they have nothing in common, they do. They are all scenarios where vision matters above all else.

When vision is an essential part of the task, eyewear stops being an accessory and starts becoming equipment. That's where our proprietary lens technology makes all the difference.

Frame styles often get the most attention, but it’s the lens that is doing the real heavy lifting. The Vision Council encourages you to examine features such as polarization, anti-reflective coatings, impact resistance, and ANSI-rated coverage as important considerations when choosing your next pair of sunglasses.

Each of these technologies solves specific problems. Polarized lenses reduce reflected glare from flat surfaces such as water, pavement, or vehicle dashboards. Anti-reflective coatings help minimize distracting reflections and improve visual comfort. Safety frame designs help block light, wind, and debris from entering around the edges of the frame.

Method Seven lenses go beyond that. We are committed to developing lenses for specific environments, not just specific visual challenges. For pilots, our lenses are engineered to improve contrast, reduce haze, and maintain accurate color perception without compromising visual integrity during flight. For cultivators, our optics help correct the unnatural color produced by grow lights while reducing eye strain and fatigue during long hours in the grow room. Regardless of whether you're a grower or a pilot, our goal remains the same. We're here to help people see more naturally, more comfortably, and more accurately. Of course, how your eyewear fits is just as important as how well it helps you see.

According to the Vision Council, how sunglasses fit, feel, and stay in place are important considerations when making a purchase. Even the most advanced lenses won't do much good if the sunglasses constantly slide down your nose or become uncomfortable after an hour of wear. Likewise, we believe that the best eyewear disappears once you put it on. You stop thinking about the frames and focus entirely on what you're doing. The eyewear becomes an extension of yourself. What you do already requires your full attention, and your eyewear shouldn't distract from it.

Yes, National Sunglasses Day is ultimately about protecting your eyes, but it's also an opportunity to think about how well your current sunglasses actually perform and help you perform. So, think about it. Do your sunglasses just make things darker, or do they help you see more precisely? Do they reduce fatigue during long days in the grow or on long-haul flights? Are they truly designed with the environments where you spend the most time in mind? When it comes to sunglasses, these questions matter more than the logo on the frame.

Method Seven is built on the idea that better vision leads to better experiences. From flying to cultivating to hiking or simply enjoying a sunny day outdoors, the right sunglasses should do more than make everything darker. They should help you see the world at its best. Happy National Sunglasses Day from Method Seven.
